Puppy eyes, which we’re sure you’ve already likely seen taking social media by storm, is one of Korea’s newest (and cutest) beauty trends that, you guessed it, is designed to emulate the natural shape of a dog’s eyes, in order to create your very own “puppy dog” eyes for yourself!

In a nutshell, this adorable eye look works by taking an eyeliner and carefully using downward flicks in order to emulate the natural, downward sloping shape that is so commonly seen on dogs of all sizes and breeds. The aim? To create a classic, almond eye with a cute and playful twist.

If you’ve heard about puppy eyes and are interested to try out this totally cute trend for yourself – then you’re in the right place! Below, we’ve created an easy-to-follow instructions guide that will help you to create the look for yourself, regardless of whether you’re a makeup pro or beauty beginner.

How To Do Puppy Eyeliner: Step-by-Step Instructions

So, now that you know what this Korean beauty trend is all about, now is the time to learn how to actually do it! Below, we’re going to be talking you through everything you need to know about how to use puppy eyeliner. Read on!

Step One: Apply Mascara!

Just like with any other eye look, you’re going to need to start by applying your favorite mascara. If you don’t currently have one, then the Maybelline Lash Sensational Washable Mascara is a tried and true favorite, but if you already have your own, feel free to use that one, instead.

During this step, we’re aiming to really open up the eye area and make it appear as big as possible, so the lashes are the perfect way to achieve this. For the very best results, take the wand of your chosen mascara and begin to wiggle the product from the roots of your lashes all the way to the tip.

Then, once you have applied the first coat, proceed to add another one or two coats of mascara until you have reached your desired intensity. If you really want to open up your eyes and create a widened eye shape, we also recommend applying the mascara to your bottom lashes, too.

Step Two: Intensify With Liner

With a precision style liner, carefully take the liner and gently outline the top area of your upper eyelash line, as this will help to unify the overall completed makeup look.

For the best results, we recommend that you start from the inner eye and gently drag outwards – just make sure that you don’t accidentally do a cat flick, as you’re going to be flicking in a downwards motion for this beauty look.

Step Three: Drag The Liner Downwards

The next thing that you’ll need to do once you have outlined your upper lash line is to flick your liner in a downward motion.

All the while, try your best to make sure that you are following the natural shape of your upper and middle eyelid, as this will help to make sure that the completed look is tailored to your natural eye shape.

If there are any smudged bits or you happen to make a mistake, just allow it to dry and then tidy the messy area up with a little bit of your favorite, go-to concealer.

Alternatively, you can also opt to tidy up any mistakes with eye-friendly wipes, such as the Marcelle Gentle Eye Makeup Remover Pads.

Step Four: Grab A Kohl Liner And Define Your Lower Lash Line

As we have already mentioned above, a big part of making your puppy eyes look professional is to make sure that all parts of the look are unified and seamlessly blend together.

For this reason, as soon as you have taken the time to define your upper lash line and flick the liner in a downward motion to create a sloping direction, you can then proceed to grab a kohl liner (such as this one) to add more definition.

For the best results, we recommend that you underline your lower lash line and gently connect the kohl liner to the bottom edge of your downward wing, as this will help to give your overall puppy eye look a more professional and uniform feel.

Step Five: Smudge And Blend With Your Finger

As soon as you have connected your downward wing to the kohl liner on your lower lash line, the last thing that you will want to do is take a finger and gently smudge the two together to create a more seamless and selfie-ready finish.

While you certainly don’t have to do this step if you don’t want to, gently smudging the two liners will help to blend the liquid and crayon formulas together, which will not only help your look to last longer throughout the day but will also help to ensure that the look appears more flawless.

To do this, you’re going to want to carefully take your pointer finger and very gently rub back and forth between the two liners to blend them both together seamlessly. Alternatively, if you do not want to use your finger, you could alternatively opt to use either a q-tip or a small smudging brush.

Step Six: Customize If Desired

As soon as you have completed blending your two liners together and you are happy with the look, you’ve technically completed the puppy eye and can officially show your look off to the world!

However, there’s still room for customization, so if you’d like to add the perfect (personal) finishing touch, then why not get creative with colors and pop some eyeshadow over the top? Or enhance your puppy eye with a touch of highlight in the inner corners?
